In Jowa 1 (834), the Shingon master Kukai (774-835) began the Rites
and Austerities of the Latter Seven Days, (Goshichinichi no
mishiho), in the Imperial court. This ritual to pray for national
protection at the beginning of the year continues to be practiced
at the Shingon temple To-ji in Kyoto to this day. The Kyoto
